What happens on the visit

A tile and grout cleaning treats the grout lines themselves. Mopping, Maid VIP’s tile page points out, cleans the tile face but pushes dirty water into the grout; the professionals it refers agitate the lines and clean them out by hot water extraction.

Stone is cleaned differently. The Natural Stone Institute warns that lemon, vinegar and other acids can dull or etch calcareous stone, stone made mainly of calcium carbonate, and Maid VIP’s tile page counts marble, travertine and limestone as acid-sensitive. Tell the cleaner about any stone before the visit.

Thousand Oaks water and the grout

The water in and around the city is hard on the U.S. Geological Survey’s scale, where hard means 121 to 180 milligrams per liter. California American Water and California Water Service both report 140 for their main source in 2025, the City of Thousand Oaks reported 148 for 2024, and Las Virgenes, which serves the City of Westlake Village and Agoura Hills, averaged 142. Camrosa Water District, which supplies a small corner of the city, drew about 55 percent of its 2025 water from local wells, and most of its well sources test harder still. California Water Service warns that hard water can lead to mineral buildup in pipes and water heaters, and the Geological Survey ties very hard water to scaling and to needing more soap and detergent: each supplier’s figure, and what it means for tile.

Camrosa Water District’s local wells averaged 276 to 572, very hard.

Before the cleaner arrives

A few minutes of getting ready keeps the visit on time and the price where it was quoted.

  • Clear the floor, and the shower and counters if they are included.
  • Say whether any of it is natural stone: marble, travertine or slate.
  • Point out cracked or missing grout before the scrubbing starts.
  • Ask how long before the floor can be walked on, and sealed grout used.

HomeAdvisor’s national figures run $0.50–$3 per square foot, and some companies add a $100–$200 minimum call-out fee. Maid VIP estimates $0.50–$3 per square foot; kitchens $100–$200, whole homes $350–$600; sealing quoted separately. The cleaning company confirms the price before any work.

Can travertine be cleaned like ceramic tile?

No. Maid VIP’s tile page counts travertine, with marble and limestone, as acid-sensitive, and the Natural Stone Institute warns that lemon, vinegar and other acids can dull or etch calcareous stone. It recommends a neutral cleaner, stone soap or a mild dishwashing detergent for stone.
