Homes and floors in Westlake Village
Westlake began as one plan. In 1963, Daniel K. Ludwig’s American-Hawaiian Steamship Company bought the 12,000-acre ranch and, with Prudential Insurance, had a master plan drawn for a “city in the country” around a lake; the City of Westlake Village’s own housing plan dates the start of building to the late 1960s. Thousand Oaks annexed the Ventura County part, 8,544 acres, in 1968 and 1972, and the Los Angeles County third became the City of Westlake Village in 1981, since California doesn’t let a city lie in two counties.
Single-family houses make up 88.9 percent of the city’s homes, and about 63 percent of its housing went up in the 1960s and 1970s, by the City’s Housing Element. On either side of the line, a house from those years can hide old vinyl tile under its carpet: what to check first.
The Woolsey Fire reached Westlake Village in November 2018. Los Angeles County’s after-action review describes it spotting over Highway 101 as far west as Westlake Village early on November 9, and the unified command’s update on the evening of November 11 listed the entire City of Westlake Village under mandatory evacuation. Cleaning up ash and smoke indoors covers what to do with soft furnishings afterward.
