Homes and floors in central Thousand Oaks
Thousand Oaks grew out of farm country. The City’s history dates the Janss family’s purchase of 10,000 acres to the early 1900s, along with their plan for a “total community”; by 1961 the town had two shopping centers, an industrial park, schools, churches and a four-year college, and on September 29, 1964, voters chose cityhood and the name Thousand Oaks. Across the city, a third of occupied homes were built in the 1970s and a fifth in the 1960s, by the Housing Element’s table from the Census Bureau’s 2015–2019 American Community Survey.
Before lifting a corner of carpet in a house that age, know what you might find. The U.S. EPA lists vinyl floor tiles and their adhesives among the places asbestos can be found, and the National Wood Flooring Association warns that wet mops and steam mops damage a wood floor’s finish over time: what can be under the carpet covers both. For the carpet itself, see what a carpet cleaning visit covers.
On November 11, 2018, three days into the Woolsey Fire, a band of the city from Thousand Oaks Boulevard north to Sunset Hills, and from Oak Park west to Highway 23, was under mandatory evacuation, by the unified command’s update that evening. On Whiteside Place, not far from the Civic Arts Plaza, the Thousand Oaks Acorn reported a home burned to the ground. Ash that settles indoors calls for a HEPA vacuum and no leaf blower: cleaning up ash and smoke indoors.
