Agoura takes its name from the Pierre Agoure family, whose ranch covered 16,880 acres of Rancho Las Virgenes. It began to grow in the late 1960s, after the Ventura Freeway section of U.S. 101 was built through the area, kept growing through the 1970s and the 1980s, when large tracts were subdivided, and incorporated on December 8, 1982. By the City’s draft Housing Element, about 89 percent of its homes were built before 1989.

The Woolsey Fire swept into Agoura Hills in November 2018. The unified command’s update on the evening of November 11 listed the entire city under mandatory evacuation, and a City urgency ordinance in February 2019 recorded that the fire destroyed and damaged homes in Agoura Hills and displaced many residents.
