Area rug cleaning in Thousand Oaks
Area rug cleaning is the cleaning of loose rugs, from synthetic runners to hand-knotted wool. In Thousand Oaks, Maid VIP, our affiliated partner, prices rugs by size. The fiber decides how a rug can be cleaned: wool and synthetics take a wet cleaning, viscose and jute much less water.
What happens on the visit
A rug is cleaned by what it is made of. Wool and most synthetics take a wet cleaning. Viscose, a silk-like regenerated fiber, weakens when it is wet, and jute and sisal soak up water and can shrink: the WoolSafe Organisation says a low-moisture method should be the first choice for fibers like these.
Dyes are the other risk. WoolSafe warns that cleaners with high alkalinity can make dyes bleed, so colors are tested before anything goes on the whole rug: how each fiber is cleaned.

Dust, wind and the rugs by the door
The National Weather Service describes Santa Ana winds as strong, hot, dust-bearing winds that come down to the coast from inland deserts. On the Woolsey Fire’s first day they pushed the fire south, and Los Angeles County’s review of the fire records relative humidity falling from 100 percent to 7 percent in one morning. The rugs nearest the doors take in that dust first; vacuum them more often in a windy spell, and both sides when you can.

Before the cleaner arrives
A few minutes of getting ready keeps the visit on time and the price where it was quoted.
- Check the label on the back for the fiber.
- Clear furniture off the rug, or say what stays on it.
- Point out pet spots and any color that has already run.
- Ask whether the rug is cleaned in the home or taken away.
Area rug cleaning questions
Short answers, with their sources below; the guides go further.
What does it cost to clean a 5x8, 8x10 or 9x12 rug?
Angi’s national figures run $80–$200 for a 5x8 rug, $150–$400 for an 8x10 and $250–$600 for a 9x12; hand washing is $5–$8 per square foot on HomeAdvisor’s. Maid VIP prices rugs by size. The cleaning company confirms the price before any work.
Can a viscose rug be cleaned with water?
Only with great care. Nourison, the rug maker, says moisture weakens viscose so that rubbing can break the fiber, and WoolSafe advises a low-moisture method first for water-sensitive fibers.
Why can’t a jute rug be steam cleaned?
Plant fibers soak up liquid and can shrink and pucker. Nourison’s own instruction is not to steam clean or wet shampoo a jute rug.
How often should an area rug be cleaned?
Every 12 to 24 months, depending on where it lies and how much traffic it gets, by ANSI’s summary of the IICRC’s S100 cleaning standard.
